The Entrepreneur - Don’t fit the corporate bill? Why should you?

Updated: Sep 27, 2021

If you work in a corporate organisation and you haven’t had a single vertical movement or promotion in the last 5 to 10 years, then the question must have popped up into your head by now 🤔💭🤨🧐 :

Do I fit the corporate bill? or rather, is my organisation trying to tell me, I don’t fit their corporate bill?

Don‘t worry, I am happy to tell you that you are not alone. You‘ve worked so hard, yet you still haven’t progressed🤷🏿

You are losing confidence in yourself, especially when your organisation puts all the blame on you🥺

Finally, depression sets in and you start blaming yourself☹️

Maybe they don’t like the way I dress🤔

Maybe they don’t like my accent🤔🤔

Maybe it‘s because of my race🤔🤔🤔

Maybe it’s because of my gender🤔🤔🤔🤔

Maybe it’s because of my religion 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

Maybe Maybe Maybe Maybe✋🏿🛑🛑🛑STOP

Your employer has a duty to protect your mental health and wellbein. If their actions say or do otherwise, then they have failed you.

My advice:

1. Break the vicious cycle and find your safe space. If your work environment is toxic leave it. It might not be easy to find another job but the moment you decide to find one, you will feel a heavy weight lift off your chest.

2. Always prioritise your mental health over corporate obligation. There might be consequences but it is better to live with a clean conscience than die with a heavy heart.

3. Don’t fall victim to the cultural norm that “you must go with the flow” or “the majority is always right”. Most of the time people go with the flow because everyone else is. Learn to think critically.

4. Lastly, never change yourself just because someone else makes you feel like you don’t fit. You are beautiful just the way you are.
